WHY THE MUSIC INDUSTRY IS DOMINATED BY THE YORUBAS!

From Olamide to Wizkid to Davido to Tiwa Savage, It is no longer news that the biggest names in the music industry in Nigeria are mostly Yorubas (80%).

By the reason of their earlier education and exposure, the Yorubas have set structures and institutions in place to ensure that they are at the top of the game. They own the biggest Record Labels, promotion companies and have the most known artist Managers. No wonder Artists from the South South and South East run to Lagos 'in search of greener pastures'

Jamzview Promotions did an X-ray on why this is so and the X-ray produced a very simple and straightforward result.
Yes, Lagos was the place where Nigeria music rose to fame but the reason why the Yorubas have remained the best in the business is because they help each other to the top. 90% of them were brought into the limelight by one record label or the other most times owned by their Yoruba brothers. Let's take Wizkid as a case study. Bank W( Yoruba) brought Wizkid (Yoruba) into the limelight through his record label EME, Starboy Wizkid went on to set up his Record label and bring acts like Mr. Eazi (Yoruba) and his most recent fast rising act Terri(Yoruba). However, very few of the big names were able to rise on their own to the top. Olamide (Yoruba) made his way to the top with his own label YBNL but didn't stop there and went on to sign many artists to the label, most notably Lil Kesh (Yoruba) who is also running his own label right now with plans to bring more artists on board. Davido, although rapidly propelled to fame by his family's wealth, still went on to bring Mayorkun, Peruzzi, Dremo, Yonda, etc. It is worthy of note that all the artists listed above are Yorubas.
Over here in the South South and South East , our biggest acts are Timaya, Phyno, Psquare (before their breakup), Flavour and Duncan Mighty. Now, take a good look at the artists listed above and think of any South South or South East artist they have or are currently bringing into the limelight. Only one I can think of right now is King Perry who is doing very well, recently signed into DM records owned by Timaya. Psquare, Flavour, Duncan Mighty amongst others even with their wealth have not been able to establish any Indigenous act in the Music Industry.
The bottom line is our artists are where they are not because the Yorubas are more talented... No! It's because those of us who have made it have refused to help the upcoming acts. Over there in the South West, we hear of new promising 'next rated' acts on a weekly basis.. We've got talent too.

To make it big, we must support ourselves, we must support each other. Support that upcoming act you know today!

With hardworking artists like Onyx (Kola Boy), Dandizzy, Melvin, Kent3, Classicb and ChuckyP, we believe there's hope for the South South and South East.

Spread the word, share this!
